RAS Al KHAIMAH // A power cut in the Rafah area on Tuesday forced dozens of families to leave their homes in search of respite from the sweltering heat.

An official from the Federal Electricity and Water Authority in RAK said an increase in demand for electricity caused one of the agency's generators at Rafah power station to break down.

"Our team immediately rushed to the station and had the problem rectified in a short time," he said.

Arif Al Zaabi, one of the residents, said such power cuts were common and that the Government needed to provide a lasting solution.

"We have power failures in summer, in winter and all the time," he said. "Every time it happens, we are told it's the last time it's happening. We want these outages to end for good."

Blackouts are notoriously frequent in the Northern Emirates during summer.

Though there have been no large scale outages so far this year, some cuts were reported in Khor Fakkan this week.

No blackouts have been reported in Sharjah city so far this summer.
