ABU DHABI // A former police officer and a woman beat a maid to death after she was sexually abused, the Criminal Court of First Instance heard.

EH, the police officer, and NS, both Emiratis, beat the Indonesian maid SB on the head with a hard object, causing her death, though they did not intend to kill her, prosecutors said.

NS was also accused of undressing SB in front of EH and other people who she forced SB to have sex with. Both NS and EH were accused of trying to cover up the crime by telling police that SB died because she slipped and hit her head.

Both denied the charges.

EH knew NS from an organisation where she worked. On the day of the incident, NS asked EH to take his Ethiopian maid to her house to teach her own Ethiopian maid how to do house chores, records show.

EH said he heard the sound of a beating when he was in NS's house.

When he went to investigate, he found SB naked.

"I entered her house and I heard 'bang-bang'," EH said.

"I told her, 'Haram, why did you undress her?' She told me, 'Don't interfere, she is my maid'."

EH claimed SB was taken to the hospital where she died, but NS's lawyer disputed this, claiming she died at the scene.

NS's two lawyers and EH's lawyer asked Chief Justice Sayed Abdul Baseer, the head of the Criminal Court of First Instance, to ensure that all prosecution witnesses be present at the next hearing.

EH's lawyer also asked for a police lieutenant to be called as a witness at the next hearing, and for bail to be granted to his client.

Both E H and N S are in prison and the next hearing will be on September 6, for more witness testimony.
