Police seal off Ajman roads

Helicopters and search dogs are being used in an operation believed to be aimed at rounding up illegal workers.

Vast sections of Ajman have been sealed off by armed police this morning in an operation believed to be aimed at rounding up illegal immigrants living in the emirate. Roads to and from Ajman were sealed off early this morning and police helicopters circled overhead. A strong police presence was reported around Ajman New Industrial Estate. Residents reported that shopkeepers had been asked for their labour cards by police, who were combing work places with search dogs.

Those attempting to enter Ajman were turned away by armed police, who said that the operation was being held to curb "problems with labourers". pmenon@thenational.ae
