Two window cleaners were rescued by police after became trapped outside a high-rise building they were cleaning in Abu Dhabi.

On Friday, police said the Asian men were cleaning the windows outside the 21st floor of a building in Al Wahda when a technical failure caused their gondola to become stuck.

Police rushed to the building to rescue the men and evacuated the surrounding area to ensure the safety of pedestrians. Ambulances were on hand in case medical attention was needed.

The rescue team carefully broke the window above the workers to pull them into the building to safety.

Lt Col Ibrahim Al Baloushi, director of rapid intervention department, said the team assessed the situation and found that it would be safer to break a window rather than manually lower the workers in their faulty gondola.

He praised the rescue team for their quick and safe intervention but called on companies to frequently maintain their equipment to avoid similar incidents in future.
