Police in Sharjah have installed a noise detecting radar to record excessively loud vehicles.

The new device will enable officers to detect cars or trucks in need of servicing as well as those which may need to be taken off the road for good.

The high-tech system uses sound meters and video imaging to spot and capture vehicles thought to be violating noise regulations.

It then alerts officers in a central police control room who can then decide whether or not to take action.

Lt Col Mohammed Allai Al Naqbi, director of Sharjah’s traffic department said more similar radars would be installed across the emirate over coming months.

Motorists whose vehicles exceed legal noise limits can currently face a Dh2,000 fine.
