SHARJAH // Forty-two plots of land have been assigned to help ease parking problems in the central region.
Paid car parks will be created on the land, said Sultan Abdullah Al Mualla, the director general of Sharjah Municipality.
Dedicated areas will also be built for lorries in industrial areas 3, 11, 12, and 18, and the Sajja industrial zone.
In the Abu Shagara area, parking is scarce because used-car dealers leave their vehicles in the few spaces. "Look at all these buildings on Abu Shagara and Al Wahda roads, none of them have parking," said Emaddudin, who lives in Al Nuamiya building.
He said that empty plots of land residents had been using as makeshift parking areas had been closed off.
Residents of Al Majaz have resorted to parking in different neighbourhoods and taking taxis home.
Work on new multi-storey car parks in the emirate, costing Dh125 million and announced earlier this year, continues.
The municipality announced it would start issuing Dh200 fines to motorists who wrongly park over two bays. Mr Al Mualla said the penalties would be enforced from next month in Al Majaz, Jamal Abdul and Nasser Road areas, among others.
