Piracy raid nets retailers

Two computer resellers who were found to be illegally downloading business software have been charged with violating copyright law.

DUBAI // Two computer resellers who were found to be illegally downloading business software have been charged with violating copyright law. Raids netted 70 counterfeit CDs and two desktop computers loaded with unlicensed versions of Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Office 2007 software. The investigation, a co-ordinated effort by Microsoft, a member of the Business Software Alliance (BSA), and the Ministry of Economy, was part of a campaign against unlicensed software.

"Eliminating software piracy from the country is high on the agenda for the Ministry of Economy, given the major economic impact piracy can have on the country's growing economy," said Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Alshihhi, the Ministry of Economy undersecretary. He said the Ministry would continue to work with BSA and its members to curb software piracy across the country. @Email:rruiz@thenational.ae
