Pink Caravan Ride 2019 seeks medical volunteers

Breast cancer awareness campaign appealing to local and resident doctors, nurses and radiologists to join team of medical volunteers

The Pink Caravan Ride is in need of 200 medical staff to join its breast cancer awareness campaign, which will be travelling through the country next month.

The campaign is appealing to local and resident doctors to join their team of medical volunteers for the coming ninth edition of the pan-UAE horse ride.

They are looking for specialists in general medicine, family medicine and radiology, X-ray technicians and nurses.

The team will be offer free consultations, ultrasound screenings and mammograms, and hold a series of awareness talks for the general public.

The ride will run from February 23 to March 1.

Doctors, radiologists and nurses who wish to participate can register online before January 30, 2019.

Dr Sawsan Al Madhi, head of PCR’s Medical and Awareness Committee, said the ride’s medical volunteers have offered over 56,000 free medical examinations across the seven emirates over the last eight years.

“They have diagnosed 61 [cancer] cases and educated thousands on the need for regular self-examinations and medical screenings to detect breast cancer,” she said.

She also said the medical team's contribution is the "key to the success of this campaign".

Dr Riyad Bendardaf, senior consultant oncologist at Sharjah University Hospital, said the campaign is important not only because of its strides in safeguarding people’s health and well-being, but because it gives us a "golden opportunity" for community service.

“I call on all practicing doctors and nurses in the country to join this great campaign,” he said.

Pink Caravan has 30 fixed and mobile clinics, as well as 200 medical personnel to offer free medical examinations.

In February 2018, it launched a permanent mobile mammography clinic, which offers a comprehensive package of medical services for all members of the community throughout the year.
