A passenger who tried to open an emergency exit at Dubai International Airport poked a police officer in the eye and punched him, Dubai Criminal Court heard on Sunday.

On November 26, at nearly 3am, the Russian defendant was trying to open an emergency exit door when a police officer approached him.

“This door leads to the aeroplanes take-off area and unauthorised people are banned from going there because it poses great danger to their lives,” the 29-year-old Yemeni officer said.

The policeman tried to stop the accused but he ignored him “then I chased him and asked him to return but he didn't listen to me,” he said.

He said that as he grabbed the man to stop him from leaving, the defendant allegedly resisted and assaulted him by poking him in the eye and punching him in the stomach.

"He poked my eye pressing on it so hard then kicked my knee so I was in pain and could not chase him," said the officer, who then called for police back up who arrested the passenger.
The 33-year-old Russian was charged with physically assaulting a police officer but did not attend court on Sunday to enter a plea.
The next hearing is scheduled for February 4 to summon him to court.
