One worker died and six others were injured when a driver swerved to avoid hitting a stray animal on Monday.

The seven workers, of Asian and African origin, were in a Lexus on Al Hamriyah, Umm Al Quwain Road, at 7.45am, when an animal ran onto the road.

In an attempt to avoid hitting it, the driver swerved but accidentally overturned the car. The impact killed one of the passengers and injured the other six occupants.

Ambulance crews took the workers to Khalifa Hospital in Ajman where one was pronounced dead and the others were treated for "minor to moderate" injuries.

Col Ali Al Jallaf, director of Al Hamriya Police Station, reminded motorists be stay focused on the road and to always wear their seat belts.
