DUBAI // Two men who assaulted an Indian man with an iron bar and stole Dh200,000 from his underwear have had their prison terms halved to one year by the Dubai Court of Appeal.

On June 12 the Pakistani men, aged 26 and 25, saw the victim, 62, hide an envelope full of money in his underwear as he left a bank in Naif.

They followed him, picking up a bar on the street, and attacked him at the entrance of a building. One hit him with the bar while the other snatched the envelope before they ran off.

One of the men dropped his phone after a passer-by heard the victim’s screams and went to help.

The victim, a salesman, said: “I was handed a cheque by the owner of the shop where I work and was asked to cash it. As I arrived at the owner’s building to hand him the money, I was attacked by two men.”

The two confessed their crime to police and prosecutors that same day. The stolen cash was retrieved.

They were convicted of forceful theft and will be deported after their sentences. The reason for the reduction was not given.
