DUBAI// A large canvas abstract work by Turkish-Jordanian artist Fahr El-Nissa Zeid sold for US$2.7 million (Dh9.9m) last night, in one of the highest-valued art sales ever in the region.

The piece, entitled ‘Break of the Atom and Vegetal Life’, went under the hammer at a Christie’s auction at Emirates Towers, alongside other high end art.

However it failed to reach its estimated value of $3 to 4 million.

“It’s definitely one of the strongest we’ve ever had, in terms of overall value,” said Michael Jeha, managing director if Christie’s Middle East, ahead of the sale.

“It’s up there with the highest.”

The work was sold as part of a wider auction of modern art from the region.

Another piece to be fold was ‘Oh Persepolis II’, by Parviz Tanavoli.

It was originally valued as between $800,000 to $1.2 million, but was sold for $780,000.
