ABU DHABI // Residents and visitors are showing overwhelming support for a traditional-style souq being built at the heart of a new shopping development.

Of 1,300 people surveyed, 97 per cent said they were in favour of the idea, which forms part of a proposed 150,000-square-metre mixed retail and leisure project on the Abu Dhabi waterfront.

The intention is to design not only a world-class shopping and entertainment destination for visitors, but also stay true to the heritage and cultural values of the emirate.

It is to be built opposite Maqtaa Tower, near Khalifa Park and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

The souq should feature galleries and exhibitions that show how Abu Dhabi has evolved over the years, said 92 per cent of survey respondents.

Attractive architecture was top of the list for residents and visitors, with 95 per cent stating this would be an incentive to visit.

About 89 per cent of tourists said that they would be drawn to the destination to see local dress and traditions.

A majority of residents were in favour of the project including more family events and activities, compared with only 66 per cent of tourists. Both groups believed that the waterfront development would reinforce Abu Dhabi's close connection with the sea.

"At the outset of every project we undertake research among relevant stakeholder groups such as residents, tourists, business groups and industry experts to get their valuable feedback on what amenities and facilities are most desired, and will benefit them the most," said Rashed bin Ali Al Omaira, advisor in investments and assets for the general manager's office at Abu Dhabi Municipality.

"This helps to ensure our projects are a success and cater to the needs of users. We will be sharing these valuable insights with the private-sector developers and investors bidding for this scheme so they can decipher the most critical components that will make this an exciting destination for all those who visit."

The project will be built in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Municipality and private-sector contractors and developers.

A name has not yet been chosen, but will be announced once a developer has been assigned to the project.

The municipality said potential investors and operators had already praised the proposals at a meeting held this year to discuss the feasibility of the plans.
