SHARJAH // A labourer has been killed and eight others injured after a fire gutted two warehouses in the emirate’s industrial area.

Firefighters were called at about 10pm on Wednesday to Industrial Area 13, said Brig Abdullah Saeed Al Suwaidi, the director general of Sharjah Civil Defence.

“The fire had started in a wood factory and spread to a garments warehouse,” he said. “Our teams from different firefighting stations joined in the fight of the blaze and Dubai Civil Defence also sent us some firefighters and a firefighting water tank.”

The blaze caused millions of dirhams worth of damage.

“We confirm one worker had died at the scene and about eight others were rescued and taken to Al Qassimi and Kuwait hospitals,” Brig Al Suwaidi said.

He said the exact cause of fire was still unknown. Some of those treated at hospital had suffered serious injuries.

Firefighters were cooling the premises yesterday and an investigation into the cause will be launched.

In another incident, fire gutted a garments warehouse in Sharjah Free Zone yesterday.

The blaze started at about 9am and was put out by firefighters from Muweilleh station. There were no casualties.
