Abu Dhabi // A construction worker was killed and at least 17 others were injured yesterday when the ceiling of a mosque under construction in Madinat Zayed in the Western Region collapsed, police said.

The ceiling fell as workers poured concrete on the structure, according to police, who described the injuries of the surviving men as ranging from minor to moderate.

Col Ujeil Ali Abdullah, the chief of the police in the Western Region, said rescuers and medics were dispatched to the mosque as soon as the incident was reported.

Labourers were evacuated from the site and emergency teams gave the injured workers first aid before they were taken to Madinat Zayed Hospital.

Except for one Arab man, all the labourers were Asian nationals, including the dead worker, whose body was also taken to Madinat Zayed Hospital, police said.

An investigation is under way to determine the cause of the collapse.
