Former Olympic champion sprinter and world record holder Michael Johnson is to open a high performance sports and fitness centre in Dubai.

The American athlete dominated the 200 and 400 metre events in the late 90s, winning four Olympic and World Championship gold medals, as well as world records over both distances.

Widely considered a legend of the sport, Johnson now 50, has turned his hand to public health and fitness and will open a fitness centre in Mina Rashid in October.

“I’m extremely pleased for this opportunity,” said Mr Johnson.

“The MJP brand is also a global one and it’s exciting to see another significant expansion in our growth journey.

“The state-of-the-art facility in Dubai is the region’s first sports performance training and fitness center and it will enable every athlete to achieve their potential, regardless of age, gender, limitation, sport or natural ability.”

The 38,750 square feet facility will offer high-performance training programs for professional athletes, as well as individual personal training sessions and group fitness classes.

Sports medicine, nutrition and athletic development programs for young athletes will also be offered at the Michael Johnson Performance (MJP) centre.

The fitness centre is partnered with DP World, which is aligned with UAE’s Vision 2021 and aims to develop and sustain a healthy community.

The Dubai centre will be MJP’s first physical presence outside the of the United States since its establishment in 2007.
