Almost 7,000 people living in Atakpame, the fifth-largest city in Togo, received free eye care from the Noor Dubai Foundation last week. The eight-day camp included 345 surgeries carried out on patients suffering from cataracts.
The camp highlighted the urgent need for ophthalmologists in the West African country, where there are 600,000 registered blind people.
Almost half of them are believed to have lost their sight because of cataracts, a highly treatable condition. The next Noor Dubai Foundation eye camp is to take place in Sri Lanka on July 5.
