SHARJAH // A newborn girl has been found in a rubbish bin in the suburb of Al Yash.

The infant was found by a resident on Wednesday morning and taken by police to Al Qassimi Hospital. A hospital spokeswoman said the girl, who was only a few days old, was suffering from complications including malnutrition.

She will remain in hospital until her condition becomes stable and then be taken to a care home in the emirate.

Investigators from Al Hira police station are trying to determine who dumped the child.

There has been a spate of abandonments and infanticides in the Northern Emirates, usually as a result of unwed parents trying to avoid prosecution for having children out of wedlock.

Last month an Asian woman was arrested after giving birth at her home in Umm Al Quwain and trying to flush the baby down the toilet.

Police were notified by emergency-department staff at Umm Al Quwain Hospital when the Sri Lankan mother, 30, turned up bleeding and seeking treatment.

Officers went to her home in the UAQ Free Zone and found the baby boy’s body in the toilet bowl.

A police spokesman said the woman was in severe pain and, fearing for her life, left the baby in the toilet and went to hospital.

They also found clothes covered with blood.

In other cases, three parents of babies left at a Sharjah mosque were arrested last year.

And Ajman Police arrested the parents of a baby girl found abandoned in a basket at the Corniche last year.
