Changing the way roads are built are has so far helped Abu Dhabi Municipality in savings of more than a billion dirhams on its infrastructure projects.
Sustainability has been a requirement in building roads, parks, infrastructure and recreation facilities in the city since 2011.
They include polymer products known as geosynthetics which have increased the life of road surfaces by a third to 30 years, while cutting the thickness of asphalt by more than 20 per cent.
Changes in the type of street lights in the city will also cut these costs by 40 per cent over the next 20 years, the municipality says.
