DUBAI // More than half the work on a new 50-hectare market for birds and domestic animals has been completed, the municipality says.

The market will include administrative offices, auction blocks, a clinic and a quarantine section housed in nine buildings.

Labour accommodation on the site will be able to house 282 workers in 94 rooms and the development will also house an animal hotel that cares for pets while residents are away.

The project, undertaken at a cost of Dh54.1 million, should be completed by November.

"We hope that the project will boost both the trade and tourism in the shade of a new sophisticated bird market in Dubai," said Hussain Lootah, director general of Dubai Municipality, who made a recent visit to the site.
