The incoming US ambassador, Michael Corbin, and deputy chief of mission, L Victor Hurtado, will soon take up their posts in the capital.

Mr Corbin arrived in the country on Wednesday evening and Mr Hurtado is expected tomorrow.

"I am delighted to be here in Abu Dhabi and especially pleased to be arriving so soon before the beginning of Ramadan," Mr Corbin said in a statement.

The long-time diplomat served most recently as the deputy assistant secretary of state in the US State Department's Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs.

He joined the State Department in 1985 after having worked in the US Peace Corps in Mauritania for two years.

His other recent posts include minister-counsellor for political and military affairs at the embassy in Iraq from 2008 to 2009, and two years as the chargé d'affaires in Syria.

From 2003 to 2006 he was minister-counsellor for economic and political affairs in Cairo. Before that he served three years as deputy director of the Office of Arabian Peninsula Affairs.

Mr Corbin's predecessor, Richard Olson, moved in recent months to the US Embassy in Afghanistan to serve as co-ordinating director for development and economics.

He had finished his term in the UAE, the embassy said at the time.

Mr Hurtado, the incoming second-in-charge at the embassy, recently filled the same position in Muscat.

He has also been posted to embassies in Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Syria, Canada and Mexico.
