Almost 9,000 fines were levied on businesses in the capital last year, says the Department of Economic Development in Abu Dhabi, and 24,000 counterfeit products were seized during the inspections. The figures were published in the authority's 2011 annual report.
Mahmoud Al Balushi, director of the department's consumer protection division, said in a report on the state news agency WAM that the department had received 2,181 complaints from consumers last year.
Of those, he said, 2,058 were handled and resolved in less than 20 working days.
