DUBAI // Authorities detained nearly 300 people last month for selling illegal goods or performing jobs unlawfully.

Obeid Ibrahim Marzouqi, the head of markets management at Dubai Municipality, said 293 workers of various nationalities have been handed to the Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department and would be deported.

The municipality performs daily spot checks to stop people from begging, washing cars in public places, and selling counterfeit goods.

"Last month, they caught 195 street vendors, 49 car washers and 42 illegal butchers and fish cleaners," Mr Marzouqi said.

More than 3,500 counterfeit DVDs, clothes, cameras, watches and perfumes were also seized.
