DUBAI // Drivers will be given a 40 per cent discount on their traffic fines if they pay by January 10, to mark National Day, police said yesterday.

The directive by Dubai Police Chief Lt Gen Dahi Khalfan Tamim applies to all fines issued before December 2. Police had already announced a 30 per cent discount for three months, beginning on September 11.

Lt Col Saif Al Mazroui, the deputy head of the traffic department, said the move was a gesture to celebrate National Day.

"The Dubai police chief took the decision due to National day. It is one of the force's means to celebrate this important day."

Lt Col Al Mazroui added that increasing the discount and extending the period in which drivers have to pay will increase the impact of an already successful programme.

"There has been a large turnout of people paying their fines since the discounts were announced, and with this new announcement, we will be expecting more drivers to pay off their fines," he said.

The discount applies to all offences, including the fees motorists must pay to prevent their vehicles from being confiscated.

Fines must be paid all at once, in cash or using a credit card.
