Property developer Nakheel has awarded a Dh447 million contract to Wade Adams Contracting to build a 12-lane bridge linking mainland Dubai to Deira Islands.

The 600m bridge will provide the main access point for the new 15.3 sq km waterfront city and is due for completion in 2020.

Work began on the project in May, under the supervision of the Road and Transport Authority.

Nakheel chairman Ali Lootah said the developer had "now invested more than Dh8.5 billion in infrastructure and construction contracts for Deira Islands, with more on the way.”

The bridge starts at Al Khaleej Road on the Dubai mainland and leads to Deira Islands A, where several new developments including Deira Islands Night Souk, Deira Mall and RIU and Centara Resorts are currently under construction.

The Deira Islands project has been described as a “world-class hub for tourism, leisure, retail and entertainment” and is expected to be a key contributor to the Government of Dubai’s tourism vision. The project, once completed, will add 40km of new coastline to Dubai, provide housing for 250,000 residents and create 80,000 new jobs.

On Sunday, Nakheel said it would be adding the emirate's second dancing fountain to The Pointe on Palm Jumeirah.

The developer signed a Dh66m deal with China’s largest fountain specialists, Beijing Water Design, to build it.
