DUBAI // Donation boxes are being placed in Dubai Municipality offices for collections to help purchase daily necessities for labourers.

The first donation box was set up by the municipality's director general Hussain Lootah in the lobby of the Deira main office.

"Labourers are the unsung soldiers of the city," Mr Lootah said, adding the initiative was part of the Shukran Lakum (Thank You All) programme launched by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, the Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

Funds collected will be used to buy blankets, shoes, socks, personal hygiene products, telephone cards, clothes for the men and their family.

The municipality also plans to distribute refreshments at work sites and will prepare food for distribution at mosques linked with municipality labour camps.
