Hundreds of motorists pulled over for violating traffic laws in Ajman yesterday were let off with a warning rather than face a fine.
The police initiative - dubbed Day without traffic Violations - aimed to educate drivers on road safety in the hope fewer traffic offences will be committed in the future.
Major Fuad Ali Al Khaja, head of the Traffic and Patrols Department at Ajman Police, said officers distributed leaflets to offenders instead of issuing them with a ticket.
“The move aims to raise awareness and motivate motorists to drive more carefully in order to help reduce the number of traffic accidents in the country,” he said.
He added that department figures showed a decline in the number of serious traffic accidents from 262 accidents in 2016 to 191 accidents last year. Minor traffic accidents fell from 25,041 to 23,028 over the same period.
