More than one million pledge loyalty to Sheikh Khalifa

More than one million people have signed an online charter praising the UAE's President and the country's model for international peace.

More than a million people across the world have signed a loyalty charter that praises Sheikh Khalifa, President of the UAE, and emphasises international peacefulness based on the UAE model.

More than 1,000 visitors to the Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (Adihex) this weekend signed the online Allegiance to Khalifa charter, bringing it closer to its goal of 1 billion signatures by December.

"The UAE is one of the very few countries in the world where so many different nationalities and religions and backgrounds live together and in harmony," said Abdulla Al Shaibani, the executive director of the initiative. "We want to globalise this love and harmony and send the message to the whole of the world."

The charter, now online in English and Arabic, will soon be available in at least eight languages.

The Allegiance to Khalifa initiative was launched in May. "This will allow people of all nationalities who love the UAE, even those who live outside the UAE, to send a love letter to the UAE," Mr Al Shaibani said.

The goal is to reach a billion signatures by the UAE's 40th birthday on December 2, when the document will be presented to Sheikh Khalifa. Mr Al Shaibani said organisers would announce "surprises and celebrations" to coincide with the December presentation.
