More funding needed for overloaded forensics labs in Sharjah, police say

Police forensics department handled 232 more cases last year than in 2011.

SHARJAH // The forensics department at Sharjah Police says it needs more equipment and software to cope with its increasing case load.

The department dealt with 8,831 forensic cases last year, up from 8,599 in 2011, said Col Dr Abdul Qadir Al Amiri, the director general of the Forensic Laboratory Department. He said the department also tested 22,715 tissue samples and handled analyses from neighbouring northern emirates, too.

"The forensic department has been essential in solving a lot of crimes in the emirate and finding people who are guilty," he added.
