Ministry to shut down 24 substandard landfills in Northern Emirates

Local authorities will have to resort to 'provisional solutions' when the landfills are closed, pending the opening of two new rubbish dumps of acceptable standards to service the four emirates.

The Ministry of Environment and Water has announced that 24 landfills will soon be closed in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah, Dr Mariam Al Shanasi, deputy under secretary at the ministry, told the Arabic-language Al Ittihad, sister newspaper of The National.

Local authorities will have to resort to "provisional solutions" when the landfills are closed, pending the opening of two new rubbish dumps of acceptable standards to service the four emirates, Dr Al Shanasi said.

It was not clear when the landfills will close or the new ones open.
