Dr Sultan Al Jaber, the head of the UAE's renewable-energy company Masdar, now has another string to his bow: Minister of State.

As chief executive and managing director of Masdar since it was set up in 2006, Dr Al Jaber has been the driving force behind the project, launching not only Masdar City, a clean-technology and renewable-energy cluster, but also the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology.

"I really consider him as my role model," said Noura Al Dhaheri, an Emirati doctoral student at the Masdar Institute.

"He is one of the few reasons that I am doing my PhD in such an early stage in my life. He started with Masdar when it was nothing but challenge. Now it is a whole city with people running around it."
