A man who raped an Emirati woman, with mental health issues, at a hotel in Dubai will spend two years in prison.
The Pakistani man, 32, pretended he was an Emirati from Ras Al Khaimah when he befriended the woman, 38, on Instagram.
He convinced her to meet him at his hotel room in the Palazzo Versace Hotel in Dubai, telling her he wanted to avoid being seen in public to protect her reputation.
The two met on September 19 when the man dragged her to bed, stripped and raped her.
At Dubai Criminal Court, the woman told prosecutors that she was not aware of what she was doing because she had stopped taking her medication. She said that, following the attack, she began suffering from hallucinations.
"I could see scary things and hear voices," the victim said. She told her mother what happened and was taken to a private clinic for treatment, where a doctor urged her to contact police.
The man was arrested and brought to court, where he denied a rape charge.
A medical report from Rashid Hospital showed that the woman was a frequent patient at several public and private hospitals for treatment for bipolar disorder and manic depression.
Another report confirmed that the two had sex.
On Monday, the court convicted the man of rape and sentenced him to two years in prison, followed by deportation.
He can appeal his sentence within two weeks.
