ABU DHABI // An illegal Arab resident has been arrested on suspicion of preying on and sexually assaulting women in the lifts of a residential building after midnight.

Abu Dhabi Police made the arrest after several women aged between 26 and 30 years came forward. Some of them were beaten by the MA, 30, who threatened to kill them if they showed any resistance or called for help, according to police.

Colonel Dr Rashid Mohammed Boursheed, director of the Criminal Investigation Department, said that the Psychological Crimes Division received four successive reports of rape and attempted rape of Asian women in the stairwells of a residential building after they had been threatened with a fruit knife in the lift.

He added that such crimes are rare in Abu Dhabi.

A police investigation team was able to track down MA based on the descriptions that the victims gave of him.
