Man reported by wife ‘out of spite’ is cleared of raping Abu Dhabi maid

The maid, however, has been sentenced to a month in jail for breaking residency rules.

ABU DHABI // A man accused by his wife of raping their housemaid was yesterday cleared by the Criminal Court – but the maid was sentenced to a month in prison for breaching residency rules.

M M, an Emirati, was accused of raping the maid after she took a cup of tea to his room, but his defence lawyer Fayza Moussa argued that the details of the allegation were unbelievable.

“There is no possible way of imagining such an incident. The man is human, with two arms. How can he hold her hostage, choke her, undress her and himself with two hands only?” she asked.

“Her story is unbelievable. She has several versions to her story and the case files show clearly the incident is made up.”

The lawyer also argued that medical investigations showed no evidence of rape.

She said that the man’s wife filed the complaint against her husband out of spite.

The maid will be deported after serving her sentence.
