A man posing as a Dubai Municipality inspector raped a female tourist, a court heard.

The woman had been in the emirate for just five days on a visit to her sister when the sex attack allegedly took place.

Dubai Criminal Court heard that the 22-year-old had been walking with a friend near Al Mamzar beach when she was approached by the Bangladeshi defendant, who claimed he worked as an inspector for the municipality and demanded to see her identification.

The 46-year-old man was carrying a walkie-talkie and binoculars, and presented a work identification card, court records stated.

When the woman said she had not have identification as she was a tourist, he is said to have asked her friend to go to his home to retrieve his own ID and then told the alleged victim she would have to pay a Dh500 fine.

The incident occurred on October 10 of last year, according to court records.

“He didn’t say why, then said if not a fine, I had to go with him to the police station,” the woman said.

“He took me towards the park’s fence near the beach and forced me to climb it, claiming it was a shortcut.”

The jobless defendant is said to have made the woman walk towards a sandy area before assaulting, gagging and raping her.

She managed to escape the scene and alert police.

The defendant denied charges of  kidnap, rape, sexual assault, physical assault and impersonation of a public employee when he appeared in court.

The next court hearing is scheduled for January 24.
