DUBAI // A driver was kidnapped and held hostage for three days over an Dh36,000 debt he owed a friend, a court heard yesterday.

Prosecutors said that BM, a 29-year-old from India, ran away from home because he was scared of what his friend SA, who lent him the money, would do. However, he agreed to meet a third man on July 8 at a Rashidiya supermarket to discuss the issue.

When he arrived he was bundled into a blue sedan car and taken to a one bedroom flat in Al Baraha where he was held captive for three days. His four captors then threatened they would hurt his family. They also called his family in Inida to demand a ransom.

Police learnt of the kidnapping from a person in India on July 11 and raided the flat the next day.

At the Criminal Court the four men - SA, 32, AT, 22, SHM, 23 and AF, 48, all from India - denied kidnapping charges.

The next hearing was scheduled for January 6.
