An Emirati man has been jailed for three months after assaulting a police officer following a two-hour car chase.

The defendant and a friend were arrested on December 13 last year after a high-speed pursuit through a residential district of Dubai.

The duo, as well as a third man, tried to escape authorities in a Lexus, but later ditched the vehicle for a Mercedes.

Officers caught two of the men, who were in an intoxicated state, while one of the passengers escaped.

A 31-year-old defendant was convicted of assault and sentenced to jail. His friend was referred to traffic authorities on a charge of reckless driving.

“We were informed that the driver and two passengers in a Lexus refused to stop and sped off,” a policeman told Dubai Criminal Court.

“They were in an intoxicated state. It seemed as if they had taken hallucinogenic substances.”

As police tried to take two of the men into custody, one kicked the arresting officer. Police later found drugs inside the Mercedes.
