An Emirati man has been sentenced to seven years in jail for leaking military information to a foreign country.

Salem Musa Fayrouz Khamis confessed during investigations to the charges of passing on information that could harm the UAE's national security and damage foreign relations, said the state news agency, Wam, on Tuesday. He was sentenced at the Federal Supreme Court.

UAE security forces had received a tip-off that Mr Khamis had been in contact with an intelligence officer holding a false consular position at the consulate of the foreign country, which was not disclosed in Wam's report.

However, during investigations, Mr Khamis said he was introduced to two persons in 2008 from the said consulate to help him resolve an issue for his Iranian wife. He added they had, in exchange, asked him for military information, as he was working for the armed forces at that time. They had also offered him money for the information, said Wam.

Khamis admitted that he provided them with all the information they asked for. However, he said he once failed to get the specific information, so had directed them to another Emirati, who also worked for the armed forces.

After getting a search warrant from the Public Prosecution, security officers searched Mr Khamis' car and recovered documents containing information about the UAE armed forces and their deployments.
