ABU DHABI // A man is on trial for insulting the UAE on social media.

He is being charged with creating a website that damaged the reputation of the country.

Palestinian M A, 38, appeared at the Federal Supreme Court on Monday and pleaded not guilty.

“What happened was a conversation between two users, your honour. I never created a website. It was a personal online page on a social media network,” said the defendant.

His lawyer, Ali Majed, said that his client never broadcast any public information through electronic means to damage the reputation of the country.

“The insults that my client posted doesn’t mean that he necessarily believed or meant them,” said Mr Majed, who added that his client’s confession was taken under duress.

The case was adjourned to January 10.
