DUBAI // A passenger who was carrying nearly a kilogram of heroin in his stomach has been arrested at Dubai International Airport.

The man, who had arrived from an unspecified Asian country, was expected to deliver the drugs to another man in the emirate in exchange for money, said Ali Al Maqhawi of Dubai Customs.

The passenger had swallowed 92 heroin capsules with a total weight of 874.4 grams.

Mr Al Maqhawi said: "The heroin was concealed in the stomach of the Asian traveller coming into the country from an Asian country through Terminal 1."

Officials became suspicious of the passenger after analysing his body language, he said. "They first suspected a passenger as he entered the customs zones, appearing confused, anxious and nervous," Mr Al Maqhawi said.

"Given their extensive expertise in analysing body language, supported by their intensive training, customs inspectors decided to closely monitor him."

An exterior body search found nothing, but after the man was sent through a body scanner, a foreign substance was spotted. "The passenger admitted that he received the narcotic substance from someone at the airport in his home country, and swallowed them," Mr Al Maqhawi said.
