KHOR FAKKAN // Police have recovered the body of a man they believe was walking through the Khor Fakkan mountains to Fujairah. Col Abdullah Saleem of the Sharjah Police air wing, said the body had been taken to Sharjah's forensic science laboratory. "We are still not certain of his identity. He had no identification papers and could have been illegally living in the country."
The crew of a plane flying into Sharjah International Airport noticed the body and alerted police, who recovered the corpse by helicopter after attempts to reach it with an ambulance and other vehicles failed, another official said. "We need to investigate the details of this case," the official added. Immigration officials in Ras al Khaimah said people were caught every week illegally trying to walk into the emirate from Oman.
Many had travelled from as far away as Afghanistan or Pakistan, officials said, crossing on foot through Iran to the Strait of Hormuz, where they would find a boat to take them to the northern tip of Oman before resuming their journey to the UAE on foot. @Email:ykakande@thenational.ae * With additional reporting by Anna Zacharias
