The body of an Asian man who drowned while swimming near Al Rugaylat beach in Fujairah on Wednesday has been recovered by police.

“The operation room received a call at 6.30pm on Wednesday about the incident. Rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the site and the body of the Asian man was found and moved to Fujairah hospital,” said Maj Dr Saeed Al Hassani, head of media and public relations at Fujairah police.

Last April, a seven-year-old boy died after getting into difficulty in the water off Yas Island. Police said the child and his brother were rushed to Al Rahba Hospital after received treatment from paramedics.

UAE authorities have in recent months sought to expand facilities for swimmers and have more lifeguards on duty to cut the number of drownings.

In October, Ajman's Civil Defence department announced the building a Dh1.5m tower, equipped with cameras and a telecoms system, to help rescue operations on Ajman beach, after a man drowned during a sunset swim in the sea off Ajman's main public beach.

In July 2017, Dubai Municipality said that popular beach Mamzarwould become the second to have floodlights and lifeguards throughout the evening.
