Man 'did not mean' to kill wife

A roommate tells the court he saw the security guard, accused of the premeditated murder, stab her several times.

DUBAI // A Filipino security guard yesterday denied intentionally killing his wife. Accused of the premeditated murder of his wife on May 2, LOM, 34, told the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance, "I did not mean to kill her." Asked by police why he stabbed his wife, he said she had been out drinking with people he did not know and as a result they got into an argument.

He said he picked up a knife, ran after her and stabbed her several times. According to prosecution documents, the victim, JA, lived with LOM in a room in a villa in the Towar district of Dubai with Filipino roommates. One, identified only as E J, said he and the others saw the defendant stab his wife several times. "We told him to stop but he told us not to interfere and threatened to kill us. He reeked of alcohol."

Police found the victim lying on her stomach, still alive but bleeding from several stab wounds. LOM was found hiding behind trees in the yard of the villa. His clothes were covered in blood and he was carrying a small bag and moving slowly towards the gate, according to prosecutors The case was adjourned to Dec 23 after the court ordered that a lawyer be appointed for the defendant. hbathish@thenational.ae
