Man arrested in Dubai for smuggling poppy seeds
DUBAI // A man was arrested at Dubai airport when 39 poppy seeds were found in his luggage, a court heard.
Dubai Customs inspector AA, said on August 1 at about 11.30am the defendant, RA, 22, arrived from Ethiopia.
AA, 25, said she saw suspicious items in his luggage when it was scanned by an X-ray.
“We searched his luggage and found the poppy seeds but he was not carrying anything on him,” AA said.
The seeds were to be planted so the defendant could use it to consume drugs, the court heard.
At Dubai Criminal Court on Monday, RA, an Emirati, confessed to charges of smuggling and possessing the poppy seeds. He also confessed to a charge of consuming marijuana.
A verdict is expected on December 16.
