The man was trying to flee the country
Man arrested for fatal Abu Dhabi hit-and-run thirty minutes before boarding flight
A man involved in a hit-and-run that killed a pedestrian on Sunday in Abu Dhabi was arrested thirty minutes before he was due to board a flight out of the country.
Brig Ali Khalfan Al Dhaheri, director of the central operations sector at Abu Dhabi Police, said they received a report of an incident near Al Mafraq bridge towards Dubai.
“The driver abandoned his car at the scene of the accident and fled right after the accident,” he said, adding that paramedics attended to the Indian pedestrian’s condition, but he died after contracting severe injuries.
Investigations revealed that the deceased had climbed the iron road barrier and tried to cross the highway from a restricted area when he was hit by the vehicle.
“In less than two hours, Abu Dhabi police investigators managed to identify the driver and located him at the airport trying to flee the country. He was arrested about thirty minutes before his plane was due to take off,” said Brig Al Dhaheri.
He called on drivers to abide by traffic laws and keep an eye out for surprises on the road. He also called on pedestrians to cross from designated areas to avoid similar accidents.
