Malfunction not cause of Sharjah plane crash

General Civil Aviation Authority has released a preliminary accident report on the December incident.

ABU DHABI // Malfunction or faulty equipment has been ruled out as the cause of a light aircraft crash in Sharjah last month.

A pilot-in-training on his first solo cross-country navigation training flight skidded off the runway before coming to a stop in the sand, according to a preliminary accident report released by the General Civil Aviation Authority earlier this month.

The pilot was not injured in the accident, but the plane's engine propeller and right wing were damaged.

The single-engine plane was not required to be equipped with a flight data recorder or a cockpit voice recorder.
