DUBAI // A mechanic and a housemaid were sentenced this morning to a year in prison for stealing a safe containing Dh8,750 in cash and valuables worth more than Dh45,000.

RR, a 33-year-old Indonesian, maid provided her lover, an Egyptian mechanic, WF, 36, with keys to her employer’s house and tipped him off about her boss’s whereabouts.

The safe in the house contained gold worth about Dh20,000, men’s watches worth more than Dh25,000, ATM cards, cheque books, documents, passports, and a mobile phone, records show.

RR and WF were also convicted of having sex outside marriage. They confessed and requested the court’s leniency; the charge was referred to the court of misdemeanours on this charge.

The Emirati employer BA, 42, told prosecutors that he returned to his house on December 17, 2010, and discovered that the safe was missing. He said he immediately called Al Rashidiya police.

His said he suspected RR of the crime, and prosecutors said she confessed to all charges including the theft during investigations.

The couple will be deported after serving their prison terms.
