Lost sizzle

Dubizzle has recently been able to function at only a fraction of its capacity. A quirk in the country's internet-filtering software and an oversight on the part of Dubizzle's programmers has caused the website to be blocked or to load slowly.

Our friend likes to look his best at work. It's his first month on the job. He is dapper enough, but in this economic climate, everyone wants to make a good impression. "Where does one find a trouser press?" he asked. We wondered about all those creases. "Head to Dubizzle," we informed him. The name for the one-stop site for everything second-hand sounds like a punchline to an off-colour joke. Founded in Dubai in 2005, the web-site has carved a niche for itself in the country's commercial sphere, offering everything from waterskis to bow ties. Just over a week ago Dubizzle's CEO JC Butler reported that expansion into the capital was seeing "phenomenal growth". But as we report today, Dubizzle has recently been able to function at only a fraction of its capacity. A quirk in the country's internet-filtering software and an oversight on the part of Dubizzle's programmers has caused the website to be blocked or to load slowly.
Until he picks up The National today, our friend may still be searching for the site. And now that we've had a chance to see his complete wardrobe, we hope Dubizzle gets back up soon - he needs more than a trouser press.
