Lorries and company buses are banned from using Baniyas Bridge as of Sunday.

The Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police made the decision in a bid to improve traffic flow and reduce the number of accidents.

Drivers of heavy vehicles transporting workers who do not abide by the ban will be fined Dh1,000 and earn four black points on their license.

“The ban is one of the efforts to enhance safety on the road, reduce the risk of accidents, and decrease traffic jams,” said Col Salim Al Dhaheri, director of the department’s traffic section at the external region.

He urged drivers of heavy vehicles to abide by the rules.

“Abu Dhabi traffic department in cooperation with Abu Dhabi municipality informed labourers’ transporting companies about the ban and advised them to take alternative routes,” said Col Salim Abdullah Al Dhaheri.

Eight traffic signs have been installed on Baniyas Bridge to remind motorists of the new ban.
