Labour of Love shares Valentine's Day spirit with Abu Dhabi labourers
ABU DHABI // The Abu Dhabi charity Labour of Love UAE and Love Doughnuts yesterday launched a campaign to share the Valentine's Day spirit with Abu Dhabi's labourers.
"Love Thy Neighbour" is a week-long campaign to show some caring to 100 women working for MBM, a facilities management company, who are far away from their own loved ones.
Angel Wesley, who runs the charity, said Geeta Kalwani, owner of Love Doughnuts, had taken the initiative to reach out to Labour of Love UAE and put together the campaign.
"She and her husband, Ibrahim, were keen on getting involved in charity," she said. "We're excited about this collaboration and working together in the future as well."
Ms Kalwani, an Abu Dhabi resident for two years, said that being of Indian origin she was aware of the situation of the labourers in the country - their hardships and what they are going through.
"There are different kinds of love, and today is not just about romantic love," she said. "We're happy to be doing this."
Until February 21, Dh25 will buy a care package including a tissue box, a pack of ladies' razors, a bar of soap, toothpaste and toothbrush.
"It's hard to imagine how they can survive with so little," said Mike Foster, 60, a visiting businessman from Singapore, who bought three packages yesterday. "I was just sitting outside and saw the packs by the window."
Ms Wesley will arrange to pick up the care packages from the shop and have them distributed in time for the ladies' games night at their accommodation on February 22.
